1/ The House flips red
After calling California’s 27th Congressional District and California’s 3rd Congressional District yesterday evening, Decision Desk HQ projected that the Republicans would win the majority. Today AP and other networks followed suit. The party caucus nominated Kevin McCarthy by an overwhelming margin, but 31 GOP members still voted against him in favor of a rival, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ). McCarthy says he doesn’t want to win with democrat help and will win the GOP majority leader position by GOP votes. Mitch McConnel won the top GOP position, even with 10 voting against him. 2/ Sorry, Michigan
You won’t be getting rid of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to a presidential bid anytime soon. Instead, she will be focused on gun control and repealing Right-to-Work. Some bills floating around include requiring gun owners with children in their homes to store their firearms in a secure lockbox, red flag laws, and stopping people from buying long guns from private sellers without a background check. 3/ Rep. Lee Zeldin for RNC Chair
Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel said she will seek re-election to a fourth term, but Republicans are drawing attention to the 2020 and 2022 losses. Instead Rep. Lee Zeldin’s name has been floated as a possible replacement. South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem and Mercedes Schlapp are other possible options. The RNC chair election is scheduled early January in southern California when 168 RNC committee members will vote. (NBC News, Fox News)
